The real Jamestown colonist had an uneasy peace with the Native Americans. The settlers suffered greatly from hunger and illness, as well as the constant threat of attack by members of local Algonquian tribes. An understanding reached between Powhatan and John Smith led the settlers to establish much-needed trade with Powhatan’s tribe by early 1608. Though skirmishes still broke out between the two groups, the Native Americans traded corn for beads, metal tools and other objects from the English, who would depend on this trade for sustenance in the colony’s early years. A period of relative peace followed the marriage in April 1614 of the colonist and tobacco planter John Rolfe to Pocahontas, a daughter of Chief Powhatan.

Despite the effort of having a peaceful relationship with the natives they might see the outsiders as a threat and may act violently to ensure their dominance of the territory so it is good to be prepared for the worst. The building of the fort makes the colonist feel safe just as the decision of trade as it ensures the peace in the territory. The decision not to look for gold is entirely based on the fact that being new to a territory the man power should be used in order to make survival the top priority. It is important that the man power is utilized to keep the food abundant in order to survive the harsh winters. It is important to focus on trade and survival and to ensure stability both socially and economically before going for ambitious things like looking for gold because there is no guarantee whether gold will be found or not and in the time when survival is the main objective it is useless and unreal to waste man power and resources looking for something that you are not sure is there or
