John Charles Fremont was born on January 21, 1813 in Savannah, Georgia. He was raised by a man named Charles Fremont and his wife, Beverly Whiting. Fremont was a teacher of mathematics to midshipmen in1833. In 1838 he was commissioned a second lieutenant in the United States Corps of Topographic Engineers. He worked next to the French scientist Joseph N. Nicollet, Fremont absorbed a great amount of information about Science and sophisticated methods, and how to manage and organize an expedition. Fremont went on five different expeditions and was known as the Great “Pathfinder”.
