The year is 1837. American farmers wake up every morning and use their handheld tools to cultivate the fields. Even though the tools did their jobs, injuries were very common. If only there was an invention that simplified the farming practices. John Deere’s invention of the steel plow paved the way into a new era of farming in the United States. Every day, we use products that someone created in order to make our lives a little bit easier. The next time you see a farmer plowing a field, you can thank John Deere. Business began to boom in the 1840s. John Deere was producing over 2000 plows a year. Besides making a plow that was easier on the farmers, John Deere’s plow put less of a strain on the animals that pulled them. Before John Deere’s plow, farmers could only use oxen to pull plows. The soil required too much strength for other animals to handle. Even with the oxen, it took a very long time for the fields to be plowed. John Deere’s plow made a pull so much easier, that horses could pull the plow.
