John Jacob Astor was born on July 17, 1763. He lived in Waldorf Germany. When John was 17 he went to London to work for his brother who made musical instruments. In 1784 when John was 21, he left for America with a few flutes and 25 dollars. When he reached Baltimore and he set off to New York City where his brother Henry lived. He got a job as a baker’s boy, a peddler, and even ran a music store before he decided he wanted to open a fur trading post. In 1786 John opened his fur trading post. A few years later he made his first of many real estate investments. By the early 1800s, John’s trading post had grown into one of the country’s leading fur companies.
