Complex. Childish. In the story “A&P” by John Updike, Updike portrays Sammy as a complex character. Sammy is immature because of his attitudes, his actions, and his observations. Sammy is immature because of his attitude throughout the story. His attitude toward the three girls is demeaning. Sammy’s attitude toward his boss is disrespectful. He confronts his boss about the way the situation was handled by saying, “you didn't have to embarrass them.” This proves that Sammy's attitude shows how immature he is.
