John Wayne Gacy, one of the most prolific serial killers in America, who killed an estimated 33 men and boys, was known for having a very abusive father and an awful childhood. Many speculate that his childhood could have influenced these murders and the way he killed his victims. Serial killers are influenced by both traumatic experiences and also genetic factors: childhood trauma and events can cause a child to seek relief through activities of violence, many serial killers use childhood events that impact their method of killing, and many serial killers can be diagnosed with mental illness from genetic factors.

With these childhood experiences impacting him, his serial murders all consisted of young men who Gacy would sexually abuse and then murder. In one report from John Wayne Gacy's Biography 2015, “He often stuck his victims underwear and other clothes in their mouths-” Which connects to a story told by Gacy where his father punished him by sticking his own mothers underwear in his mouth.Some may not agree with the fact that childhood impacts methods of killings because many serial killers do not have motives from their own experiences like Dr. Michael Swango, a former U.S. Marine, ambulance worker, and physician whose motivation for the killings was intrinsic and never fully identified according to the “Feder for the Analysis of Violent Crime”. Many serial killers may not even have a method or motive for killing others, but many serial killers have motives that were directly impacted by their childhood. For example, one of the most famous serial killers, Jeffrey Dahmer
