Joseph R Walker was a fur trapper from Tennessee. He was born on December 13, 1798. When he was old enough, he left his home to go to the far reaches of America to become a fur trapper. He participated in illegal fur trapping and was in prison at Santa Fe New Mexico for five years. He gained parole by helping in the Mexican War against the Pawnee Raiders. Once he had finished there, he and a group went from the southwest to Yosemite, California. On the trip they went through Sierra Desert and had to eat some of their horses. When they got there, they saw towering Red woods and beautiful waterfalls. They knew the trip was well worth it especially since he was the first American to see it.
