The theme of “Story of an Hour” is based off her emotions such as the clouds and the blue sky. In the Story of an Hour, Mrs. Mallard was a married lady that suffered from heart trouble and found out the bad news of her husband’s death. She expressed her emotions from the bad news in by her surroundings in which takes part in creating the theme. In the text it states she sat in a chair by a window and she just stared out into the sky as if the clouds were the negative thoughts/events and the blue sky was the positive thoughts/events. Chopin creates the theme in the story by using passive voice, word choice, and the paragraph structure. Kate Chopin uses certain techniques to shape the theme. The first technique is passive voice. One reason the author uses passive voice is to encourage the reader to think about who the text is referring to. Chopin uses this technique to make it easier for the reader to understand and comprehend what is happening throughout the story because of so much happening in just one hour. From the beginning to the end of the story Mrs. Mallard starts to be known as her first name, which is Louise. The story also starts with her husband being dead, but later finds out he is alive.
