Krakauer seems to want to prevent the demise of other people looking to become one with nature in a similar way to McCandless and try and show that McCandless wasn't some stupid kid who died in the woods. throughout the book Krakauer offers explanation and reasoning for some of McCandless actions as if he's trying to prove to the audience that there was more to McCandless' life than that he was just some kid who ran away from home trying to become one with nature and avoid responsibility.
