Is it possible for children and teens to “let go”? In the song “Let It Go”, by Idina Menzel, the singer emphasizes self –identity, and empowerment. This song is presented in a Disney movie, where the majority of the audience is children. However, the influence of the song derives not from its aesthetic, but rather how perfectly the meaning its delivered by figurative language. It fits into the overall narrative, thus it develops the singer Elsa into a compelling, relatable character. This song is about being true about herself and being proud about who she is. Furthermore, she personifies the glow of the snow that is reflecting light. Also, she describes a kingdom of isolation in a metaphor. It means there is nobody around. “The wind is howling like this swirling storm inside” (Let it go, line 5) Alliteration is present in line 5. Thus, it means that she feels confused. “Couldn’t keep it in, Heavens knows I tried” (Let it go, line7). “And the fears controlled me, can’t get to me at all” (24). On the literal aspect, it is known that the singer believes she shouldn’t use her ice powers in front of others, and she’s been unable to contain them. Line 24 is an example of a personification, because fears can't actually control individuals. Nevertheless, these line delivers a meaning that goes beyond the explicit aspect. The essence of judgement is delivered. In other words, most of the youth feels that at one point in their life they have done something others don’t think of as the normal or that others don’t accept. Consequently, the song encourages the youth to be strong and believe in oneself.
