People change through life based on other people’s decisions, and based on what they know and learn. In the novel The Giver, the main character Jonas lives in a utopian community and is chosen to be the next Receiver of Memories at the Ceremony of twelves. This is when he meets The Giver, who trains and gives him the memories for the job. Jonas learns about millions of things that he doesn’t have in the community, such as pain, love, color, happiness, and memories of the “outside world.” Based on what he knows and learns, he becomes a dynamic character throughout the novel as we see his perception of life change which affects the plot line powerfully.

When Jonas starts experiencing the memories, he notices things that are wrong in the community.
