Was Lincoln objective or easily rattled by the day to day pressures? Ultimately, a leader cannot be consistent and respond to issues objectively if they are preoccupied with their own issues (Bethel, 2016). Unfortunately, leaders who struggle with alcohol, financial issues, and relationship issues bring a level of emotional instability, which leads to ineffectiveness in their role (Manning & Curtis, 2012).

Generally, Lincoln was a healthy and vibrant man. While others in the White House partook of alcohol, it was not something he was drawn to. In fact, he said, “In my judgment such of us who have never fallen victims have been spared more by the absence of appetite than from any mental or moral superiority over those who have” (Abraham,
