On March 4 1865 President of the United States Abraham Lincoln gave an inaugural speech for the second time in his career, and it was not what the public expected. Given all of the issues the country faced at the time, Lincoln kept his speech short and simple. Not only was he able to keep his talking to a minimum, he was also able to unite the people and point out their similarities rather than their differences. He was able to achieve this purpose with the use of rhetorical devices such as pathos, ethos, and repetition.
