Franza Kafka uses a variety of literary elements throughout The Metamorphosis to strongly elaborate the importance of food in the Samsa family. After awaking as an insect, Gregor Samsa is immediately depicted as a vermin and puts an absurdity to the book. The use of food throughout the book is able to replace the grotesque aspects of this novella with sanguine and optimistic emotions in attempt to rebuild a familial structure for the Samsas. “Grotesque” defines as being odd, unnatural, and absurd and is presented throughout the book mainly in the form of the theme of isolation and the absurdity of Gregor’s new state. With the diverse application of symbolism, character development, and mood, Kafka was able to emphasize the significance of food in creating a positive atmosphere throughout the Samsas’ apartment during their calamitous problem. Aspects of food used throughout The Metamorphosis are applied to show a symbolism of happiness and joy, as well as character relationships to replace the grotesqueness of this novella. With Gregor’s questionable conflict throughout the book, he was quickly isolated from his family and work friends allowing him to gradually grow in negative ways and affect his household. Earlier on from the book, Gregor’s mother illustrated clear emotions of anxiety and fear when she aggressively spilled coffee all over the carpet (Kafka 85).
