The Loss of Canada’s Innocence

World War One was something that affected not only Canada, but the whole world. It had a huge impact on the culture of the world, but in this assignment I’m going to be talking specifically about how Canada was affected. World War One was a major shift in the Canadian society. So many things happened in only a few years. Canada was forced to grow up. The people of Canada were pretty optimistic when they started to create the country and build on it. Canada was part of the British Empire, so whatever Britain did, Canada did. When news of the war spread, the British colony was excited. They were proud that they would be able to honour their country and fight for what they believed was right. Everyone grasped at the chance to help out in battle. Some joined because they wanted glory and they wanted to be known for something, known as something more than they were, others joined because they needed money so that they could feed their families and stay alive. Whatever the reason for joining was, most people were glad that this had happened. When the war continued to drag on, Canadians lost confidence in themselves. They felt like they had fallen back and lost all the peace and confidence that they had just gained. They had lost their pride in all that they had done. Canadians had started to wander from God somewhat. If they were at war, why hadn’t God stopped it? Why hadn’t God just made everything peaceful? All these questions filled their minds, and they started to drift away from God. We know that God doesn’t force things on us and He lets us make our own decisions, even if those decisions will hurt us, because He knows that we need to learn in our own time. While this was happening to some people, other gripped even more tightly to God and their beliefs in religion. They only had religion to hold onto to keep them going and not go insane.
