In the story of the “Story of an Hour” the main conflict revolves around the main character’s weak heart and the alleged death of her husband. The main character, Louise Mallard, is at first shown to be a frail weak old woman however as the stories continues it is revealed that even though she does feel some grief for her husband’s sudden passing its overshadowed by the newfound sense of independence and hope for the future. Mrs. Mallard experiences a sense of freedom at the news of her husband’s death where before she would dread her life and hoped for it to be short she then prays for her life to be long so she can enjoy her newly found independence. Sammy shows a small superiority complex as he views himself above his own co-workers and boss and views the customers as mere sheep however towards the end of the story he is humbled when he over analyses a simple decision made by the leader of the girls that he refers to as ‘Queenie”. Queenie simply bought some snacks for her mother and Sammy immediately started to imagine Queenie as a member of a high class family where people like himself where viewed as lower class. The conflict begins towards the end of the story when the store’s manager confronts the girls about their attire. Sammy angered at the girls being embarrassed quits his job on the spot without a second thought in an attempt to impress the girls, only to be ignored, and to attempt to rebel against the rules he has unknowingly conformed to. Only after Sammy quits does he realize that he made a horrible mistake with nothing to show for it. As he looks back into the store he realizes his small attempt to “rebel” was useless and he only made life much harder for himself simply because he allowed his hormones do the thinking for
