Luis Valdez is an American playwright who is known for being a pioneer or “godfather” of the Chicano Movement. As well, Valdez is the founder of El Teatro Campesino. A major influence in his life was how he grew up as a migrant worker with his parents and siblings; Valdez was raised in worker camps all across California. Due to his childhood, Valdez would later take it and use it to color his creative and activist career.

El Teatro Campesino started with short performances in the fields of California's central valley for audiences of farmworkers in 1965.
