In 1927, the Japanese made a strategic planning document that would be used in order to help them take over the world. The document, Tanka Memorial stated that in order to take over the world, you must take over China; in order to take over China, you must take over Manchuria. The main goal that this doctrine aspired for was autarky, which is control of resources which created economic and political independence. In 1931, Japan attacked Manchuria: “Japan sought resources and an economic base in which to exploit the rest of the Chinese mainland and Asia” (Zeiler). The Chinese did not have the leadership or weapons to match the well-equipped and disciplined Japanese troops. Richard Overy describes the time to follow as an “uneasy truce” (Overy). Which describes how the Japanese refused to stop their conquest; while the Western Powers shook their head in disagreement, but did little to stop them. The Japanese claimed that they had a right to Manchuria since they had driven the Russians out in 1905, which of course did not change anything. The Japanese government saw the scarce population as a perfect state to for military and economic use. It is not until 1937, that a “full-scale” war breaks out between China and Japan, which occurs at the Marco-Polo after the “uneasy” years have followed the invasion from 1931. According to Thomas Zeiler “War came to Asia because of the economic pressures of the Great Depression” (Zeiler). This statement specifically shows how Manchuria is the birthplace of World War II.
