The idea of Manifest Destiny was crucial to the development of the United States’s sense of nationalism by giving specific American citizens a bond over a sense of privilege and purpose supposedly bestowed upon them by God. To understand Manifest Destiny it’s necessary to understand that it is the concept that the United States conquest of Mexican and Native American territory was inexorable and inevitable. Not only that, but also that this mission was given to them by God, so it was their duty to fulfill it in order to bless the rest of the world with their ways of living.
