Mary Edwards walker (1832-1919) was an American feminist, suspected spy, prisoner of war, and a surgeon. She was born in Oswego, New York, U.S. on November 26, 1832 and was the daughter of Alvah (father) and Vesta (mother). She had five sisters and one brother, and was the youngest of all of them. Mary and her family were devoted Christians and “free thinkers”. In 1855 Walker graduated from Syracuse Medical College with a doctor of medicine degree. She married her fellow medical student, Albert Miller on November 16, 1855 (just before she turned 23), and set up a joint practice in Rome, New York. Because the public would not accept a female doctor, the practice failed ostensibly. After their divorce Walker briefly attended Bowen Collegiate Institute in Hopkinton, Iowa, in 1860. The U.S. Army had no female surgeons, and at first, she was only allowed to practice as a nurse. She was denied a commission as a medical officer, but served anyway as an unpaid volunteer surgeon at the U.S. Patient Office Hospital in Washington and at the First Battle of Bull Run, July 21, 1861. She worked as an unpaid field surgeon near the front lines at Fredericksburg and Chattanooga in 1862. In 1863, Walker was the first female surgeon of the Union Army. During her service, she frequently crossed battle lines, and treated civilians. In September 1862, she wrote to the War Department requesting employment as a spy, but she was
