The character Mary Fortune, from Flannery O’Connor’s “A View of the Woods”, has numerous personality traits most of which reflect those of her grandfather, Mark Fortune. One trait that Mary possesses is a sense of pride. As Mary’s conflict with her grandfather continues to develop throughout the story you can feel her pride when she declares herself to be pure Pitts, thus dismissing her grandfather’s name of Fortune. Another one of Mary’s traits is stubbornness. Mary shows her stubbornness in many ways, but nothing like when she takes great care in reminding her grandfather, every time he brings up the idea of her being beaten, that “Nobody beat[s] me and if anybody did I’d kill him!” (O’Connor), allowing Mary to push herself further away
