The movie The Wizard of Oz begins with a teenage girl named Dorothy that lives with her Uncle Henry and Aunt Em, along with her dog Toto, on a farm in Kansas. In the midst of the urge to run away from home, Dorothy sees a fortune teller that states her Aunt Em is worried sick about her. As Dorothy approaches her home, so does a tornado, then she is knocked unconscious. Dorothy wakes up in Oz, her home had landed on the Wicked Witch of the East, killing her. During Dorothy’s time in Oz, she is praised for killing this witch and comes across people reminding her of individuals from home. As badly as Dorothy had wanted to escape Kansas, this dream of Oz had left her extremely grateful for all of her loved ones in Kansas. Upon her return to Kansas, she transformed from a girl who felt misunderstood, to a girl who was grateful for all that her life consisted of. Initially Dorothy had a poor outlook on herself and life, which completely changed by the end of the movie. By using Keyes’ Mental Health Continuum I was able to determine the differences in Dorothy’s well-being from the start to the end of the movie. Keye’s Mental Health Continuum consists of three aspects being, mental illness which consists of major depression, languishing where life seems empty, and flourishing where an individual thrives in all aspects. The visual pleasure she had felt would be an example of hedonism. The term hedonism, is described as an individual who experiences sensual pleasure which is the first component of the good life. Although hedonism is temporary, and does not sustain any personal growth, it brings pleasure to the individual.
