Should a mentally handicapped person be held responsible for his/her own actions? Absolutely not! Unlike non-mentally disabled people, the people who are mentally handicapped comprehend things at a slower rate and cannot help their physical movements. Mentally disabled people were born the way they are and did not choose to have that life. For as long as we can recall, mentally handicapped people have been treated in ways that seem ungodly! As years have gone by, people are beginning to understand they cannot help themselves.
Mentally handicapped individuals did not just decide in their mothers bellies they were going to be different. God made them the way they are and that cannot be helped, fixed, or solved. Most the time, depending on their condition, their mind takes longer for them to understand things the way we can. In the novel “Of Mice and Men” Lennie says, “I could pet it with my thumb while we walked along,” referring to a mouse he found. He thought it was okay to keep a dead mouse to pet just because it was soft. Handicapped people don’t see things as clear as they should and have a different view on life.They see one bad thing the same as another bad thing. Lennie thought killing his puppy was the equivilence to killing Curley’s wife.
The disabled have the same body as non-disabled people, but most the time they do not work as great as ours. With some cases, they can’t move their bodies because their muscles don’t work and it’s harder for them to do daily life tasks the way other people would. With that being said, they aren’t always in control of their body and their movements. A disabled person could randomly kick or throw their arms out and hit someone, but it wouldn’t be on purpose or their
