Thirsty Rocks Out of 15 different types of rocks, which rock will absorb the most mineral oil and increase the most in mass? To understand this experiment, it is important to know a few key facts. Obsidian, granite, basalt, scoria, and rhyolite are igneous rocks. Shale, calcareous tufa, sandstone, conglomerate, and limestone are sedimentary rocks. Slate, marble, quartzite, gneiss, and shist are all metamorphic rocks. The porosity of a rock is the measure of the rock's ability to store a fluid. Permeability measures the resistance to the flow of the fluid through the rock. In addition, mineral oil comes from distilling petroleum. From the research, the hypothesis for the experiment was created. If 15 different rocks are submerged separately in 60 ml of mineral oil, then sandstone will increase the most in mass and absorb the most mineral oil because sandstone is porous and permeable and …show more content…
To begin the experiment, start with identifying the 6 unknown rocks in the science kit. Also, lay the plastic garbage bag over a flat surface, preferably a table. Second, measure the mass of each of the rocks using the scale and record. Third, mark each plastic cup with what rock will be within each cup. Fourth, pour 60 milliliters of mineral oil into each of the labeled cups. Use the paper towels the clean any spills. Fifth, place each rock into their appropriate container. The experiment required that the rocks were left to sit for 48 hours. After 48 hours have passed, the final step was to remove the rocks from their containers, measure each rock's mass, and record the masses in the data table. The independent variable was the type of rock used. The dependent variable was the change in the rock's
