“Freedom is a hard bought thing and millions are in chains, but they strain toward the new day drawing near.” – Paul Robeson. The Civil War was an occasion that ensued in slaves reaching sovereignty of their own lives. This freedom was at the expense of a battle within the same nation, North versus South. Both sides, although they are irreconcilable, both dealt with similar hardships. Every side has their own cognition for fighting and their own strategy to fight. In “Killer Angels” by Michael Shaara both sides have different conspiracies and reasons for fighting but they shared same objective, which is to win for their side.

“Tell General Ewell the Federal troops are retreating in confusion.” Opposed to the Confederacy, the Union carefully planned their scheme. “We attacked in the afternoon, just at dusk, and the stone wall was aflame from one end to the other, too much smoke, couldn’t see, the attack failed…” Even though the Union planned and attacked they had failed. Eventually, the North trapped the South between two ridges on a flat and won over them. The Unions strategy was the best after all. Both, although with many failures during the war, they individually had different strategies and cognition.

All in all, both sides had the desire to win and dedicated their lives to do so. The Civil War was a very strenuous process that the soldiers had to go through. Both sides had a goal to reach, both going through different processes and using different strategies. At the end, freedom was earned which was the point. Nations should work together from now on and support each other. “We are only as strong as we are united, as weak as we are divided” –J.K.
