The scenic design creates an illusion for the audience in order for them to understand where the play is taking place. The set must also deal with scale in order to better the relationship between the actor and the set. As mentioned in the book, theatre resembles life, therefore, the atmosphere that a set puts out to the audience should be one that a room in real life would present. The set design helps set the tone & style, time & period, and central image.
I chose to do my scenic design on A Midsummer Night’s Dream. The time period and location for my design is around the Archaic period (c. 750–c. 500 bc) through the Hellenistic period (323–30 bc) in Athens, Greece. The play portrays many events surrounding the marriage of Theseus, the Duke of Athens, to Hippolyta, the queen of the Amazons. The original setting for the play is in ancients Athens and the main theme is love.
There are five elements of scenic design. Line, as defined in the book is the outline or silhouette of elements onstage. In my drawing, the lines are the marks made with pencil or the edge created when two shapes meet. For example, the lines on the temple. Mass is the overall bulk or weight of scenic elements. Line also exists in nature as a structural feature, in this case, such as the branches of the trees. The mass creates an awareness of depth. For example, the temple structure, it should not be very heavy since it needs to be moved around when the scene switches to the forest. The chair is also light in weight for movement, while the trees can be heavy since they don’t really move during the
