In our American society today, it is nearly impossible for the average citizen to make over a certain amount of annual income without a higher-education degree. The country has slowly realized this fact and is on a path towards acceptance of it. Additionally, every single American has a civil duty to pay taxes to the federal government, whether it be anything from sales tax to income tax. The United States government has set criteria for income tax rates, which depend on a number of factors based off of each individual, but these rates are extremely unequal and unfair when applied to their respective groups. It seems that with each month that goes by, it becomes increasingly costly to live in the country, and the government should “raise wages for workers at the bottom of the pay scale by enacting a higher minimum wage and indexing it so that it keeps up with rising living costs” (Williams). It is already hard enough trying to find housing, food, clothing, transportation and other basic services that are required to survive, when someone only makes seven dollars an hour. A majority of minimum-wage workers still live with their parents and take on second jobs, because it really is hard to make a living off of such low wages. If the minimum wage is raised, a much brighter outlook will arise for the lower-class. Many of them will be able to plan for having more things or starting families they would not previously be able to take care of. Some might try to pursue more education so they can make an even greater annual income. Most minimum wage workers have learned and adjusted to their means of living by seven dollars an hour; just think how beneficial it would be to them if they earned four more dollars an hour. Poverty-stricken citizens and the lower-class could get a shot at success and actually be able to live in our costly nation, if the government increases the minimum wage.
To conclude, the United States needs to create new taxation policies and increase the minimum wage if they want to help the people who need it most. Most recently, Donald Trump was elected to be the next president and will be inaugurated into office on January 20th, 2017. He is the figure to point to and ask for change in our economy. As American people who deserve change, our voices need to be clear, concise, and loud. We must ask for a new tax code and a higher minimum wage, so that we can all start a path to more comfortable and equal
