Women all over the world constantly struggle with injustice and gender inequality, whether it’s in the mainstream media, professional world force, or in their own homes. Women who are misrepresented in the media are expected to resemble a porcelain figure with the most elegant features and toned muscles. This would be understandable if men were expected to look muscular and lean; however, this is not the case. We see a popular trend on TV and movies where the ideal American family showcases a husband that is overweight while his wife is very slim and attractive. We see it on television shows, such as King of Queens and According to Jim as well as animated shows such as Family Guy and The Simpsons. The Association for Women’s Rights in Development (AWID) is a feminist organization that works to bring gender equality in the media, as well as equality in other aspects of their life. The AWID Forum incorporates a workshop, the Master Tools, which presents stereotypes of “maleness” and femaleness” that’s usually being depicted in the mainstream media (Sarnavka 91). She does not explicitly work to decrease the negative misrepresentation of women in the mainstream media. However, she works to increase awareness of women injustice and inequality in all criteria’s.
