Two people that had a significant positive impact on Maya’s life are Vivian Baxter and her grandmother. From both she learns the power and strength of women. Her grandmother, Momma, is who she spent most of her childhood with. Momma teaches her life skills and important things needed when growing up. By bringing Maya to church Momma gives Maya the faith necessary to believe in one's self. Momma is a great role model because she runs her own store, which she build from the ground up. Being a pillar for the community, Momma helps Stamps through the depression by loaning money and bartering for basic goods. “She was the only Negro woman in Stamps referred to once as Mrs.” With her role model being the most respected Black woman in town Maya learns and is taught how to break through racial …show more content…
The mexico trip began when her father brought her to Mexico so she could practice her Spanish. At an Cantina in Mexico, Maya is left by her father and she takes refuge in her father's gray Desoto. She is very scared and afraid to die all alone in Mexico. Her Father returns, drunken, and Maya is forced to drive them home. She doesn't know how to drive and this is when she learns the most. She learns that no matter your actions, life hands you a task which requires the most of your abilities. She does manage to get them home, with a few scrapes and bruises. The month on her own is the most significant and very influential moment in her life. She spends this time living in a car in a junkyard. Here she lives with a community of orphans and together they manage to live. They gather cans, sell firewood, and dance in contests, what ever they can to get money to survive. It is here where she becomes an adult. She takes charge of herself and works hard. From this I know that she is a changed woman. The Mexico trip and the month on her own are the
