Identity is a term that represents the way one and others view them. Identity can change and has a serious impact on the way someone views life. Your identity is a combination of how you view yourself both physically and mentally (or on the inside) and in the case of Mr. Samsa it could be viewed as either. During the course of the short story Mr. Samsa is transformed as to what he depicts himself as being a bug, most likely some kind of beetle, this changes how he sees himself mentally, physically and how he is affected socially. This is what determines a person’s identity, how they are seen socially or by others, how they are seen physically by their appearance, and by how they view themselves mentally with morals/values, self-esteem, and etc. these combined make up a person’s identity. …show more content…
This activity can both negatively influence and positively influence our thoughts and ideas. Throughout our short story Gregor has two social views, one being a level-headed and hard-working man who takes care of his family, and the other being a disgusting creature whom when in sight strikes fear and anger. This is evidenced by how the store clerk reacts to seeing Gregor Samsa, “the chief clerk had already reached the stairs; with his chin on the banister, he looked back for the last time. Gregor made a run for him; he wanted to be sure of reaching him; the chief clerk must have expected something, as he leapt down several steps at once and disappeared; his shouts resounding all around the staircase.” This states how much being different from others can have a large consequence on your social acceptance. At first, Mr. Samsa did not understand why others feared him however over time he knew something was wrong. This slowly built up over time and he started behaving more and more like the vile beast he was being described
