Apartheid is a term used to describe separation; something black Africans faced for over 50 years. Apartheid most commonly took place in South Africa where the majority of people were black. They were seen as a threat by white Africans, therefore, Apartheid was created to protect whites over blacks in every aspect of life. This meant every public facility was separated along with their education systems. Blacks were also forced to live in separate residential areas that were overcrowded and lacked jobs. Apartheid is demonstrated in two short stories, “Mrs. Plum” and “Closed For Business”. These two stories show different attitudes and perspectives on apartheid based on their experiences in South Africa.

This is his main source of income and the money he needed in order to survive and provide for his family. Apartheid is introduced when the owner of Holiday Heights, the hotel he delivered to, fired him. His bread was not the reason he got fired. A new bakery opened in town and the hotel decided to get bread from them now. At this moment the story states, “all that had become part of tradition suddenly became a closed book, the dismantling of a gentleman’s agreement, He had feared this, that a white baker would come to town, but not this soon. After all, he knew he was black and the entrance for him was at the back of the hotel” (Ossendryver, Closed for Business, para 20). The author shows his perspective and attitude toward apartheid during this moment in the story. He demonstrates that simply the color of Joseph’s skin is what gets him fired. The owner did not even try the other bakery’s bread before making
