Journalist are people who create and make articles/stories in order to entertain society. We need Muckrakers in the press and media. I agree with the definition of muckraker and I do think that people go above and beyond to get a story. The term Muckraker is used to characterize reform minded American journalists who write largely for all popular magazines and news sources. They rely on their own investigative journalism reporting. Muckrakers often work to expose social ills and corporate and political corruption. Muckrakers were significant people who aimed at achieving change in America. President Theodore Roosevelt made the term “ Muckraker ” popular. This name was also given to reporters who uncovered the bad side of things that no one else would notice. It was about a meat packing industry and the horrible things that went on inside of there. He published his book for the public to read so they would know about the things going on. The Jungle had tremendous impact on the nation by informing the people of the unsanitary and horrible working conditions. Sinclair wrote how sausage was made of all the bad parts of the meat, scraps off the factory floor, sawdust, and even body parts of the workers which were taken off by dangerous blades. They talked about how workers sacrificing their fingers and nails by working with acid, catching diseases, and working long hours in cold, cramped conditions. “ Within months, Congress passed the Pure Food And Drug Act and the Meat Inspection Act to curb these sickening abuses ” . He told people how supervisors dyed and cleaned the meat to make it look fresh, even though it was old and diseased.
