Social Dominance Theory states that people are always motivated to protect the group. It indicates that human society is ordered by systems of group-based hierarchies and that individuals within those groups are motivated for the most part to behave in ways that maintain those hierarchies (Pratto, Sidanious, & Levin, 2006; Sidanius & Pratto, 1999).

Social dominance theory is good for explaining workplace behaviors, as it describes the group behaviors and describes in-group favoritisms and out-group discrimination. The status of each group is perpetuated in their behaviors and vice-versa. Therefore, maintaining group allegiance and protection. For example, consider a lunchroom environment where social groups gather for a meal. Persons of the same social group subconsciously sit together in recognizing their social status

if I am out with friends having a few drinks, my consumption is never near the limits of being impaired or unconscious. That is due to my personal identity as a parent to always be available, coherent, and conscious of my responsibilities to my children. God forbid my children ever need me and I am intoxicated or non-responsive.
But my sense of belonging to that particular group is that they are of the same social status and beliefs. Therefore, my behaviors are excepted by the group. “Social Identity Theory explains that people are motivated at different times by different portions of who they are. In some instance, they will rely on their personal identity, and at other times they will rely on their social identity. The identity component that motivates behavior will be determined by the specific situation that the person is in.” (PSU WC, 2016)
