A mystic and slave preacher from Virginia, Nat Turner believed that God had appointed him to lead a rebellion. In August 1831, Turner led a group who killed over 60 whites for the sake of racial equality. After he was captured and executed, Thomas R. Gray, a local lawyer, recorded Nat Turner’s confession prior to his execution. Though his short lived rebellion, Nat Turner ignited a fire within the North and South.
