Elie Wiesel once said, “To forget the dead would be akin to killing them a second time.”During the Holocaust, eleven million people died.Of those eleven million people, Elie Wiesel was one of the lucky few to make it out alive. He had to face death and overcome losing his closest friends and family. In the novel “Night” by Elie Wiesel, the main character, Elie, is affected by the events in the book because of his father, giving up on religion, and his physical change.
Elie’s father was a well respected man in their community. He was always giving advice “...on public and even private matters” (page 4). Since he was never home, Elie and him had a very distant relationship. Throughout the beginning of the Holocaust, Elie wanted nothing else other than to stay with his father. When they were sent to Buna, one of the aids asked if he wanted to get into a good Kommando, Elie stated, “Of course. But on one condition: I want to stay with my father.” Towards

The lack of food and poor hygiene caused him to become very weak, making it harder for him to work. In the middle of January, Elie’s foot began to swell making it hard for him to stand, let alone walk. The Doctor told Elie, “...in two weeks you will be fully recovered...your foot was full of pus. I just had to open the sack” (page 80). The next night, they all received news that the Russians were coming. This meant that they had to evacuate before the Russians caught them. Even though Elie had not fully recovered from his injury, he ran with the rest of the prisoners to get away. April 10 was the last day of torture. At around six o'clock all of the SS officers had fled. Three days after they were released, Elie became very ill. This resulted in Elie being sent to a hospital. The first time he was able to look at himself in a mirror, “... a corpse gazed back at me. The look in his eyes, as they stared into mine, has never left me." (page
