Assignment # 2
For this assignment I decided to reach out to an AT&T retail store manager Rodney Owens. Rodney currently manages one of the largest AT&T stores in the state of Texas. Rodney invited me to do an inventory count with their inventory manager Natalie Garza to get a first hand look at AT&T’s inventory system Opus Mobile. Opus Mobile uses a manual count that once inputted into the system compares the data of what should be in inventory vs what is missing or in some cases overages. Natalie says the system has improved over the years. She stated about ten years they used a scan gun that tallied up all items. They then compared missing vs overages once that was complete they manually entered the information into the system and submitted the count.

Natalie says the most important task is making sure you receive all inventory within 24 hours of delivery. She explained it like this, UPS will drop off inventory pretty much every day Monday – Friday. Once the inventory is signed for by an AT&T employee it is considered delivered and the clock begins. All inventory is scanned into the system and a variance report is created. If all matches up then great you are done for the day, if there is a discrepancy then a ticket must be created stated the item was damaged, or missing. If this ticket is not created then the system will automatically log the items as correctly counted and accepted. This is another reason a variance can occur within the system creating inaccurate counts. Once an inventory count is complete the overage dollar amount vs the shrinkage can only be $300.00. So for instance if you had 100.00 in extra unaccounted inventory and 400.00 in missing inventory the shrinkage would equal 300.00. ( -400 plus 100 = 300) Maintaining the correct inventory management is vital to the operations of the store and carries that importance through out the company.
After experiencing first hand their system I do believe it’s a really good one. It
