Dementia syndrome can be caused by a number of conditions and causes several different types of dementia. The causes of dementia have not been definitely determined and there are many possible causes that are thought to cause dementias. Age, dementia is more likely to develop with age and dementia is more common in older people but it can also affect younger people. People with learning disabilities are also at a higher risk of developing dementia. There are also possibly genetic causes; if members of the family have developed dementia then you at a higher risk of developing the disease. Dementia can be caused by medical conditions that cause deterioration in the functioning of the brain i.e. Parkinson's disease, or Huntington's disease. Medical conditions such as strokes that disrupt the blood flow to the brain causing cells to die. High blood pressure, heart disease, and smoking can cause dementias through reducing the blood supply to the brain. Poor nutrition, dehydration, and drugs and alcohol can also be a cause of dementia. Alcohol abuse can lead to liver failure and toxins in the blood which can affect the brain i.e. Korsacoffs dementia. Head injuries can damage the brain cells and cause injury to specific parts of the brain which could lead to the onset of dementia.

A persons abilities may change because of the physical environment they are in and the staff attitudes. They may experience grief and desolation if they cannot recognise their home or families and this may cause depression and reduce their abilities.
