Two main issues lead to the discussion of our healthcare crisis. First, U.S. healthcare costs as a percentage of GDP are a lot higher than in other countries (Stebbins). Second, a huge number of people in the U.S. do not have healthcare coverage. The government’s most recent attempt at fixing America’s healthcare crisis was The Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare. This law was passed in March 2010 and the overall goal of the act was to make affordable health insurance available to more people (Affordable Care Act). Although Obamacare did increase healthcare coverage to more Americans, it did not resolve the high cost. The intended purpose of health insurance is to protect people from financial ruin due to trauma or serious illness, but even with insurance people can’t afford the expensive medical bills (Pitts). When the Affordable Care Act was passed there were many protests when people learned that they would be taxed as a penalty if you didn’t sign up (Young). For others, they were happy because they could soon have health insurance and they couldn’t be turned away for having a pre-existing condition and also wouldn’t have to struggle with expensive medical bills if an unfortunate event were to occur (Young). The U.S. has one of the highest rates of obesity (Stebbins). We need more funding for preventative medicine and health education programs so that everyone can learn how to prevent illnesses that can be prevented by just a change in lifestyle. We should come up with a prevention-focused health care system so that healthcare costs will lower (Chopra). Without that focus, health care costs will continue to increase. “We all need to accept and build a future where prevention becomes a dominant force.
