In the case Obergefell v. Hodges, gay marriage its protection under the Constitution was under dispute. Obergefell made an extremely convincing argument by quoting that under the 14th amendment and two of its clause, including the due process clause, gay marriage was protected. Obergefell also utilized a list of financial benefits to give clear examples of the ways the effects of gay marriage spread past the obvious social implications. In addition, Obergefell strongly swayed over the justices by telling a specific story about a couple that had been together for 18 years, but could not be together on one of the partner's death beds because they did not have spouse access.
