In the novel One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest by Ken Kesey the “hero”, Mr. Randle Patrick McMurphy, is thought to be a martyr by the narrator Chief Bromden. Despite his outward altruistic appearances, McMurphy acts entirely in a selfish manner throughout his life-ending tenure at the ward.
