Within the Lifting scene in “One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest”, Kesey uses fidds to show the first signs of a rebellion which is influenced by the actions of McMurphy. After McMurphy’s failed attempt to lift the control panel, he tells the group, “But I tried, though. Goddammit, I sure as hell did that much, now, didn’t I?’” The diction choice of “tried” shows that even though that McMurphy failed, he at least attempted to do the seemingly impossible, which is more than what the patients can say. McMurphy creates a situation that forces his “followers” to reexamine themselves and consider taking the risk to face the Nurse with him.
