One Hundred Years of Incest - A Look at Incestuous Relationships in “100 Years of Solitude” In the novel, “One Hundred Years of Solitude,” incest is a prominent theme and plays an immense role in the novel. Even from the very beginning with Ursula's warning that children born from incest will be born with the tail of a pig, and indeed at the very end of the novel, a Buendia is born a pig’s tail. For some families in Latin America, incest is not seen as taboo. According to an article on Envio.org, incest in parts of Latin America is so prominent that many families carry the same exact genes for generations. Because the Buendias’ have to consciously try to avoid incest, they are viewed as a family who are unable to escape their homestead and look outside of themselves. Thus, making the whole family solitary, in a way. Essentially, incest is the practice of keeping family members within the family, so it marks the Buendias’ as too disengaged from the world around them. Incest is viewed differently between different cultures, and in “One Hundred Years of Solitude,” the families use incest as a way of keeping to themselves, thus making it a form of solitude.
