Oral Reading Fluency (Timed Assessment) The oral reading fluency timed assessment that I used to assess Joshua’s reading fluency consisted of a passage that is two-hundred and ninety-nine words long. To complete this assessment, I set a stopwatch for sixty seconds and Joshua has to do his best reading, while reading the passage. After the sixty seconds is up, I have to see how far Joshua got in the passage. Then, I calculate his fluency (WCPM) by subtracting the number of errors from the words attempted in the sixty seconds. Lastly, I ask one question about the passage to see if Joshua comprehended what he read. I choose to administer this assessment because of Joshua’s lack of emotion within his reading. The first part of the assessment is the background knowledge; which is where the assessor shows the child or person only the title of the story and the person or child tells what they think the story will be about based on the title. The second part of the assessment was pertaining to word recognition. The child or person had to read the passage and the assessor evaluated if there were any miscues while reading the passage. Then, the third part of the assessment was retelling and the person or child had to answer comprehension questions and retell any extra details they can remember from the story.
I choose to administer this particular assessment with Joshua because it measured or assessed three different things. Therefore, I was able to get information on his comprehension, word recognition, and his retelling all with one assessment.
For the background knowledge component of this assessment, Joshua did very well. The title of the passage was “The Soccer Game,” therefore; when I asked Joshua to look at the title and tell me what he thought it was going to be about he said, “I think it is going to be about someone playing a soccer game.” However, this title did make it kind of obvious as to what the passage what going to be
