Osteoporosis is a disease of the bones. It happens when one does not take in enough minerals that are essential to bone density and growth. As a result, one’s bones become dangerously weak and may break from a minor fall or even from simple everyday actions, like twisting or lifting an object.
Osteoporosis means “porous bone.” If one looks at healthy bone under a microscope, he or she will see that parts of the bone looks like a honeycomb. The holes and spaces in the honeycomb like area of the bone are much bigger in a bone from a patient with osteoporosis than they are in a healthy person’s bones.
