Overcoming Adversity Case Study

A mind-nerving challenge that I have faced in the past as a young child was transferring from Italy to the United States in 2006 alongside my parents and my younger brother. The main problem I had encountered when I arrived was that I wasn't fluent In the English language, I felt timid and nervous before I had the comprehension. I also wasn't adapting to the cultural-social environment In the new country I step foot on. Once I moved to my new home in Waltham, MA (before I moved to Brockton in 2012) as a six-year-old I felt scared and pessimistic to socialize with my neighbor. I had three neighbors and the neighbor who lived on top of my apartment had a relationship with me and my younger brother. A significant problem in my adversity to integrate was at my elementary school. I especially remember the first day of school, when I boarded the bus and felt marginalized by the anonymous students. At the elementary school, I was placed in the class of students in which their first language was not English. He once gave me a frisbee as a gift on a sunny afternoon. At school, I would read as many books as possible, along with my classmates, we listened to audios of stories or sentences as part of an evaluation. It took me roughly 2 years to learn English through the ESL (English As A Second Language) program. Reading was my favorite hobby at that time; in fact, my parents used to bring me to the library with my brother to choose as many books as we wanted. As an ESL class, we participated in many activities such as dying t-shirts or arts & crafts. Another way I faced my adversity was when I joined the Boys & Girls Club swimming team.
