Ah, Lake in the Woods--an average neighborhood encompassing an average lake, accompanied by an old pavilion, a makeshift baseball field, and an average swimming pool. Essentially, it was the epitome of middle-class America. Yet to my childhood friends and I, Lake in the Woods was anything but average. The people who lived there made it an extremely special place. It was a safe haven--a community where we were free to explore. We could walk up and down the streets, go swimming, or hang out at the pavilion without our parents having to worry about our safety. We were lucky enough to have the opportunity to grow and develop without any limits placed upon us.

This seemingly ordinary neighborhood formed the basis of my social life while growing
