After taking MATH 251 I have learned so much not only in math but how to teach children in different types of math and different ways to approach it. Something I really took away from this class is that everyone is good at math if you are taught the basic rules and understandings. Overall I thought this class was great but I did not always think it would be that way.
Going into this class I was so nervous. Everyone I had talked to about the class said it is next to impossible and I might have to retake it. I had built up in my mind that yes I might need to retake it because I will not pass. I have never been good at math so I was just horrified. I have dyslexia so learning anything is challenging for me and takes me ten times longer to get the answer or to even understand the question. So in math I just tried to memorize steps to get the answer instead of truly understanding why. I had accepted the fact I am not good at math because I am just bad at it but this class proved I am in no way bad I math I just need to understand the meaning so I am able to build onto in later years like algebra.

After this class for example I thoroughly understand that multiplying is groups times the size of those groups. In previous years in math I would just memorize math problems like five times six or 12 times three. I never thought about breaking it out or drawing a picture to get the answer so moving onto decimals I was so lost but now I can do it and understand how to explain it to students who may just be learning it. Graph paper has literally changed my math life. I barely used graph paper in previous math classes. It makes everything seem clean and clear to see steps. I never had thought about using graph paper to explain division or subtraction. It truly helps so
