Personal Narrative: Moving To Hawaii

Moving to Hawaii from California at the age of five was an experience that I had never imagined I would undergo. Coming from a small town in California where my parents only source of income came from the city park that they took care of while we lived in a trailer on the lot, doing this significant of a move would prove to be challenging. However, this obstacle was one they were willing to take in order to give their family a better life. With crime on the rise and new gangs popping up every day, my parents knew that they had to leave quickly and move to a place where their children could grow up not in fear. So we packed up and move 3,000 miles across the ocean to Hawaii and lived on a small lot of land in the middle of nowhere. After realizing that the rainy city of Hilo wasn’t for them they seeked a new home in Kona. However, with little to no money from my dad’s job, four children and a rising housing market, we had no home to seek. Instead of remaining miserable in the jungles of Hilo, we decided that we would camp on the beach (Spencer Beach) until an opportunity came up. I am in the National Honor Society at school and have volunteered with school food drives, elementary school track meets and Iron man. Through the running start program and my HWST professor, I have also gotten the opportunity to give back to the land and clean up the amy greenwell park. I’ve also been able to help with community drives like the slipper drive. Which gives slippers to elementary schools around the island where many children don’t have shoes at school because of financial situations with their family. I will continue to give back to the home I call mine because it gave me a new hope for my
