Personal Narrative: My Clinical Rotation

My clinical rotation this semester is in an urgent care clinic. It is a fast-paced environment and there is an allotted 30 minutes per patient for the care providers. Last semester, I was in a hand orthopedic surgery specialty and I shadowed my preceptor and he supervising surgeon the entire semester. It included approximately 15-minute per patient consultations when not in the operating room and some hours of surgeries in the OR. It was amazing to be able to do rotation in that specialty! This semester, I feel like I am starting from scratch all over again. It is going to be my first time to take care of patients as an advanced practice provider (APP) student. My learning goals during this clinical practicum include (a) to do well with my history taking and head to toe assessments, (b) to review and apply anatomy and physiology as one of the pathways to create differential diagnoses, (c) to learn what treatment modalities are appropriate for my patients, (d) to know when to refer and seek help from my preceptor and his colleagues, and (e) to be competent and confident as I transition in this role.
