Do you believe the school board should add one and a half hours to school each day? Many people disagree with extending school hours and others fully support it. In my opinion, I am one of the people who believe there should be no extra hours added to each school day. I do not think school should have extended time because it impacts extracurricular activities, it gives children and teenagers less time to do their homework, and it will decrease the attention span of students. Adding extra hours to a normal school day changes a student’s schedule completely.

First of all, additional hours to a school day will affect extracurricular activities. Large amounts of students participates in after school sports or clubs. Adding an extra one and a half hours to a school day will prevent kids from doing their activities. Since the school day will be longer with extended hours, students will get out of school later. They will not be able to get to their activity on time. In addition, if high schools get extended time, multiple teenagers will not be able to go to work. Many teenagers have jobs immediately after school, and they will get fired since they’re unable to get to their job on time.

A numerous amount of students already believe school is long enough, but extending school hours will cause them to lose focus. School lasts for eight hours a day and adding one and a half hours more will make it nine and a half - that’s already more hours than the average student sleeps! Since their attention span is shorter, they will learn less. Classes will be longer if school has extended time, which means more time to discuss different topics in class. Students get bored very easily, and if they’re not paying attention, they will not be able to correctly do their homework. Extended hours will impact students grades since they’re not paying
